Event Detail
Bristol and South Glos Older People's Network - March 10
Date: Monday 8th March 2010 - Start time: 13:00 - Event length: 01h 30m
Venue: Dawn James Conference Room, The Vassall Centre, Bristol
How are the issues facing black and minority ethnic (BME) older people different? How are they the same? What services can best meet their needs? Come and hear from local organisations working in the area.
• The numbers of older people from (BME) communities are rising rapidly
• BME older people are more likely to live in poorer quality housing and have poorer access to benefits and pensions
• Myths about minority ethnic communities need challenging: there is not necessarily an extended family which "looks after its own"
• Older people from different communities may share experiences of ageism and racism, but the circumstances of Chinese, Afro-Caribbean or Asian older people may require different approaches and solutions
• Access to majority services for BME older people remains problematic. They often feel that community-based voluntary organisations are more likely to reflect their needs but such organisations are the least financially secure
This meeting is open to any voluntary or community group in Bristol or South Gloucestershire interested in older people’s issues. We will provide lunch. There will be lots of opportunities to ask questions, share information, chat, and discuss issues that concern you.
