Survey evidence has shown that traditional stigmas attached to mental health have not gone away. Even today, 1 in 8 people would not want to live next door to someone who has had a mental health problem. One third of people think people with mental health problems should not have the same rights to a job as everyone else. And nearly six out of ten people describe a person with a mental health problem as ‘someone who has to be kept in a psychiatric or mental hospital’.

Yet admitting a mental health problem is the first step to accessing even low-intensity treatments such as cognitive behaviour therapy. Are there ways of reaching people who have mental health problems, but who feel discouraged by fear of social stigma from admitting it? What are the positives of mental health ‘without the label’? What are the potential negatives? Social prescribers Anna Sansom and Debbie Howitt will be here to talk about their work and its relationship to increased mental wellbeing amongst their clients – including those who would not regard themselves as suffering from any kind of mental illness.

The Care Forum’s North Somerset Mental Health Network is for any voluntary or community group in the area. Our meetings are open to everyone interested in mental health issues, including statutory sector representatives. There are always lots of opportunities to ask questions, share information, and generally discuss issues that concern you. Network reps will be giving updates too, come along and hear the latest!
