Bristol Networks joint training event with RNIB and NHS Bristol

Date: Friday 9 March 2012

Time: 10.30am-2.00pm (lunch included)

Venue: David Hiatt Baker Conference Centre, The Vassall Centre, Gill Ave, Bristol, BS16 2QQ

Getting your eyes tested is more than checking to ensure that you are wearing the right pair of glasses. It is also an eye health check up. For example, an eye test will check if a person is developing an eye condition such as glaucoma, age related macular degeneration or cataracts. All are leading causes of sight loss.

Evidence shows that older people and in particular older people from Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities do not visit the optician regularly and are at a higher risk of developing sight loss.

The Eyes Right screener is a tool which can be used by anyone who comes into contact with older people, to check who is at risk and who needs to attend an optician's appointment.

The Eyes Right training will be delivered by Professor David Thomson, Department of Optometry and Visual Science at City University, London. The training will:

  • provide an overview about the eyes and the changes that occur as we get older;
  • provide an overview of the barriers to people attending opticians;
  • explain the purpose of the Eyes Right screeners and demonstrate how they are used;
  • include a practical session where delegates can test each other;
  • conclude with a brief Q&A session.

Who should attend?

Community workers, health professionals, social care professionals, volunteers, anyone working with older people or with an interest in eye health.
