Bristol Tranquiliser Project

The Project is a voluntary sector organisation set up originally in 1985 to help those having problems with certain prescribed psychotropic medication (benzodiazepine tranquillisers/sleeping tablets, other sleeping tablets and antidepressants).  We help people who are taking, who are considering taking or have recently withdrawn from this type of medication. Our work is to help people make a safe withdrawal from prescribed psychotropic medication, namely tranquilisers, sleeping pills and antidepressants.

Prescribing of antidepressants has quadrupled over the past 20 years. In 2013 over 53.3 million prescriptions for antidepressants were issued by community pharmacists in England. It has been estimated that over 4 million people in England are taking antidepressants regularly. This number is increasing by 10% every year and there is no sign of this trend changing.

The project provides a full range of services to those living in Bristol. The helpline is also available to those living in other parts of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.  The service is not available to those living outside these areas.

To contact us please telephone the Helpline on (0117) 9500020 we are open 10am – 3.30pm Monday – Thursday.

The helpline is often very busy and we are unable to return calls, so please keep trying.

The Bristol Tranquilliser Project is a small charity that is partially funded by the CCG
