CQC and the National Federation of Women’s Institutes working together to help carers

The leaflet sets out what carers should expect from a good hospital and aims to encourage them and the family members they care for to share their experiences of care.

Carers play an important role in working with care providers. They are often an expert source of knowledge about the needs and behaviour of their loved one. Carers also have certain rights that are set out in the NHS Constitution.

However, we know that in too many situations, hospitals are not providing adequate family or carer support. Our 2014 thematic review of care between hospitals and care homes for people with dementia found that 61% of inspected hospitals did not adequately involve people with dementia or their families in care decisions.

The leaflet  has been sent out this month to all 6,300 WI branches across the country.

The project is part of our commitment to working with national and local community organisations to gather feedback from people about their experiences of care.
