South West: New mental health website seeks recovery stories

A new website is being launched that gives people that have suffered mental health problems a chance to tell their story of how they have dealt with the issue and started on the journey of recovery.

Recovery South West – http://www.recoverysouthwest.co.uk – is providing a platform for people in the region (Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Avon/Bristol, Gloucestershire) to talk about their problems, and how they have moved on in their journey.  The site is also has a lot of information about mental health, and useful resources to help people deal with an issue that affects one person in four at some point in their life.

The not-for-profit company was set up by a group of mental health professionals and “experts through experience” (people who have suffered mental health issues), who recognise the benefits people gain from describing their experiences, and reading about those of other people.

Mike Metcalfe, one of the directors of Recovery South West, says: “Recovery South West wants to help people with mental ill health to find their voice and reclaim their personal stories.

“We welcome anyone in this position to send us their story. It can be in the form of text, pictures, video or audio, whatever is the best format for you.  By giving people a platform and an audience, we strive to provide hope, improve understanding and break down boundaries between individuals.”

Recovery South West is sending out leaflets asking for contributions to dozens of groups across the region that provide support to people with mental health issues, as well as to writers’ and artists groups. There are guidelines for contributors on the website, and all work is carefully reviewed before being posted.
